Science Communication Innovation Center

Today there is virtually unlimited potential to communicate science. The production and delivery tools are high-quality, accessible and inexpensive. But let's face it, science communication is still difficult. To be truly effective you need to engage your audience, maintain accuracy and inspire further exploration. The sciCenter exists to make scientists, educators and the media professionals who support them, the best science communicators they can be.

The sciCenter is dedicated to providing full video production services geared to online delivery. Our work is professional, quick and inexpensive. We work closely with our subjects to identify the audience and tailor content to best serve it. We devise delivery and social networking strategies to ensure content is consumed. Finally, we provide training to scientists, educators and students so they not only gain skills in communicating via video, but learn best practices to coordinate or even produce their own content. The result is not only better science communication, but also better science communicators.

We’ve learned the most effective, scalable way to teach challenging concepts is to bring the audience as close to the actual subject as possible. That means putting scientists in direct contact with teachers and student leaders who can return to the classroom and share in the most effective, efficient and authentic ways possible. Innovating ways to recreate direct contact through video is at the core of the sciCenter. Our style seeks to incorporate the people most closely related to the subject and represents the diversity of the audience they intend to serve. We use our connections with schools to include teachers and students. They can conduct interviews, be on-camera guests in the lab or field, or host scientists in classrooms. The content speaks to the audience because the audience is part of the content. The result is authentic, relaxed and always contains something immediately familiar, even if the main subject is not. By decreasing the physical distance between subject and audience, we can try to decrease the gap between concept and understanding.
